Common deficiencies

What actually fails inspection.

A fire pump can pass its churn test for years while quietly losing the capacity the sprinkler design assumes. Only the annual flow test measures what the pump can actually deliver.

A performance curve that's been sliding for years

Impeller wear and suction problems cost a pump a few percent of its rated capacity each year. We compare every annual test to the nameplate curve and to last year's numbers, so the loss shows up while it is still small.

Dead batteries on a diesel controller

A diesel pump will not start on failed batteries. Weekly runs are what catch this — and skipped weekly runs are the most common thing missing on the systems we onboard.

Fuel that's been sitting for a decade

Diesel breaks down as it sits: water collects, bacteria grow and sludge settles. An annual fuel analysis is cheap next to replacing fouled injectors — and it is what keeps the pump starting.

How often does a fire pump need to be tested?

A weekly or monthly no-flow churn test depending on the pump type and driver, plus an annual full-flow performance test measuring output at churn, rated and peak flow. Diesel-driven pumps carry additional requirements around the driver and fuel.

What is an annual flow test actually measuring?

Whether the pump still produces the pressure and flow it was rated for. Pumps degrade quietly — the churn test proves it starts, but only a full-flow test proves it still performs.

Does the controller need attention too?

Yes, and it is routinely the neglected half. Transfer switches, alarms and supervisory signals all get tested — a pump that starts but cannot signal that it started leaves the building blind.

Do you handle the backflow preventer on the same visit?

Yes. The backflow assembly usually sits on the same supply, carries its own annual certification, and it is more efficient to test both while the system is down.
