Commercial Kitchen Hood Suppression Inspection

Commercial kitchens run open flame and hot grease all day. The suppression system over the appliances is what stops a flare-up before it reaches the ducts.

Six-month code cycle, fusible links, nozzle caps, gas valve interlocks, and hood cleaning. We schedule around your working hours, so you have no service interruptions.

Common deficiencies

What actually fails inspection.

Kitchen systems live in grease, heat and turnover. These are some of the most common findings we come in contact with on hood systems.

Inherited a system?

We onboard systems installed by other contractors. First visit is an inventory and a condition report — priced, itemized, no surprises.

01

Fusible links past the six-month cycle

Grease-loaded links insulate themselves — the fire has to burn hotter and longer before the system trips. Semi-annual replacement is the cheapest insurance in the building.

NFPA 17A §7.3.3.1

02

Nozzles aimed at appliances that moved

Kitchens rearrange. A fryer that slid three feet during a renovation is no longer under its nozzle — we check the nozzles against where the appliances sit now.

NFPA 17A §7.3

03

Grease build-up in the duct run

Suppression protects the hood; it cannot reach a fire that has moved into the duct. NFPA 96 sets how often the duct run has to be cleaned to bare metal, and we check where it stands at every service.

NFPA 96 §11.4

04

A gas valve that doesn't close on trip

The gas valve has to close when the system discharges, or the agent is working against a burner that is still lit. We confirm it closes at every service.

NFPA 17A §7.3

Common Questions

Kitchen Hood Suppression — questions we get asked.

Ask Us Directly
How often does a kitchen hood suppression system need servicing?

Every six months per code, including fusible link replacement. Hood and duct cleaning runs on its own schedule based on how heavily the line is used.

Do the fusible links really need changing every six months?

Yes. They sit in grease-laden air and their response is what triggers the system — a link coated in grease may not release at the temperature it is rated for.

Does the system tie into the fire alarm?

Usually, along with gas valve shutoff and the exhaust fan. All of those interfaces get tested during service.

Do I need extinguishers as well as the hood system?

Yes — a K-class extinguisher belongs on the cooking line in addition to the hood system, and it is one of the more common things we find missing or out of date.
