How often do fire hydrants need to be tested?
Annually. Every hydrant on the property is inspected once a year — caps, threads, stem and drainage — and opened and flowed to clear the barrel. Separately, the private fire service main behind the hydrants gets a flow test every five years.
Who is responsible for the hydrants on my property?
If a hydrant sits on your private fire service main, it is yours. The water utility maintains the hydrants on the public main in the street. A hydrant on private property is part of the building's fire protection, and it is inspected and tested on the same basis as everything else in it.
What does a fire hydrant flow test measure?
How much water the main delivers, and at what pressure. Opening a hydrant tells you the hydrant works. The flow test tells you what is behind it — the number a sprinkler system's design is measured against.
What happens if a hydrant fails?
A seized stem, damaged threads or caps, and a barrel that will not drain are the usual findings. Some are repairs and some mean replacing the hydrant — either way you get the price before the work starts.
