Room integrity testing: the five-year test that goes overdue
Your agent is only as good as the enclosure holding it. What a door fan test measures and why it fails.
A clean agent system is a promise: if fire starts in this room, the agent will reach an extinguishing concentration and hold it long enough to end the event — ten minutes, in most designs. The cylinders, the detection and the release circuit all serve that promise. But the promise is kept by something nobody thinks of as fire protection equipment: the room itself.
The enclosure is part of the system. And unlike the cylinders, the enclosure changes every time someone pulls a cable, cuts a ceiling tile, or renovates the space next door.
What a door fan test measures
Room integrity testing (NFPA 2001 §5.5) puts a calibrated fan in the doorway, pressurizes and depressurizes the space, and measures how fast air moves through every crack and penetration the room has accumulated. From that leakage figure we calculate the retention time: how long a discharge would hold concentration at the protected height. “Pass” means the ten-minute hold survives. “Fail” means your very expensive agent would pour out through the walls while the fire relights.
The test is required at commissioning and every five years — and after any change to the enclosure. That last clause is the one that matters, because data rooms never stop changing.
Why rooms fail
- Cable penetrations. Each new tray or conduit from every project since day one is a hole, and many are not sealed to the standard the room was commissioned at.
- Dampers that do not fully close. A damper open a few degrees vents agent as fast as the system delivers it.
- Raised floors and plenums. If the protected volume connects to the floor next door, the retention calculation was done for a smaller room than the one you have.
- Door hardware. Sweeps, gaskets and latches that stopped working properly years ago.
What failing costs
Almost nothing, if the fan finds it. A failed test comes with a leak map — smoke pencil in hand, we mark every path under pressure — and the fix is fire-rated sealant, damper adjustment and door hardware. A retest confirms the room now holds concentration for the required time. Otherwise you find this out when a discharge does not extinguish a fire, which costs a great deal more.
If your clean agent system has been in place more than five years without a door fan test, that test is overdue. It takes an afternoon and doesn't discharge anything.
